World class Women's Discus for Morton Games

The Morton Games women’s discus competition, kindly sponsored by Fashionflo, Is proving to be very popular with athletes as some of the world’s best throwers will compete in Morton Stadium, Dublin on July 11.

Germany’s Antonia Kinzel last year’s winner returns. The 2023 World University Games gold medallist took the win last time with a best of 59.12. This was some 50cm short of the stadium record which is now all of 31 years old, 59.62, set by Marie-Paule Geldof (BEL) on 12 June 1994. With the entry this year showing several athletes who have thrown 60m plus surely the record will be rewritten.

Ieva Gumbs (LTU) is an extraordinary 20 times national champion, between the discus and shot and was the 2019 World University Games bronze medalist with a 64.98 PB. Other 60m throwers to look out for include Chrysoula Anagnostopoulou (GRE), PB 62.40 and Kirsty Law (GBR) PB 60.13

Six time Irish champion Niamh Fogarty earlier this season in Ohio set a new Irish record of 58.40, can she carry that excellent form into Morton Games and onwards to nationals? Anna Gavigan continues to make big progress, her best currently stands at 53.91. The final Irish athlete entered is U/20 Clonliffe Harrier Megan Comiskey, she has been rewriting her club record books all season and will look to continue that at home.

The entry also includes Zara Obamakinwa who recently set her PB at 58.17, Denmark’s Annesofie Hartmann Nielsen, PB 59.69, set last month, and , Italy’s Stefania Strumillo, PB 59.80 a 4 time national champion and 3 times National champion Barbora Ticha (CZE), PB 56.09.
