This year’s Morton Games features for the first time ever an international women’s 800 T34/T 54. The field includes Great Britain’s Paralympian extraordinaire Hannah Cockroft. Cockcroft’s Paralympic career began at the London 2012 Olympic Games and has continued right through to last year’s Paris Games, over the course of those 12 years she has amassed an extraordinary 9 Paralympic gold medals over a range of events: 100, 200, 400 and 800. In addition, her CV includes 13 world para championship golds and 3 European championship golds – the only blemish on an almost pure golden collection is a 100 European championship silver from Berlin in 2018!
As if all of that were not enough, she has also received Britain’s highest possible civic honours, she was awarded an MBE, OBE and CBE for services to athletics. Cockcroft is without a doubt the most decorated athlete ever to compete at a Morton Games.
The international programme on July 11 will commence with the women’s 800 T34/T54, Cockroft will be the favourite, she has a PB of 1.44.43. She will however face a strong home challenge from Shauna Bocquet. The Galway woman, has been competing at diamond league level, having competed in the 2024 Van Damme meet following her Paris Paralympic debut, and has a 1.48.42 PB. These 2 will be the hot favourites from a field that also includes British athletes Niamh Currie, Fabienne Andre, Erin O’Flaherty and U/20 athlete Yasmine Hodkinson.
The women’s international T34/54 800 will be a rip roaring start to the main Morton Games programme in a little over two weeks time.
