An always interesting topic of conversation during the final couple of weeks before Morton Games is the question of which Stadium record (or hopefully records!) will fall on the night.
2024 was a special night with new Stadium records in the men’s shot, women’s 1500, men’s 800, men’s 5000 and men’s 4 x 100 relay.
So, likely fallers in 2025?
The women’s discus record looks in serious peril, 59.62, it is now 31 years old set by Marie Paule Geldhof (BEL). If Geldof’s record goes it will indeed be a ‘Tonic for the Troops”! (Youngsters, Google it!).
Other ageing records include the men’s 400 of 45.25 standing to the credit of Arnaud Malherbe (RSA) dating back 25 years and of a similar vintage, Olga Raspopova (RUS)’s 800 mark of 1.59.69.
There are bonuses on offer to the winning athlete in the event of a new Stadium record in the women’s: 100 hurdles, 400, 800, 1500, high jump, discus and men’s: 100, 400, 800, mile, 5000 and shot.
Bonus on offer to the winners:
Stadium Record bonus: €250
An additional bonus of €500 to the winner of the men’s 400 in the event of sub-45.00 and to the women’s 400 in the event of sub-50.00.
There are further time bonuses of €1000 to the winner of the men’s 100 in the event of sub-10.00 (legal), Morton Mile sub-3.50.00 and women’s 1500 sub-4.00.00.
Irish athlete will be rewarded by Morton Games for setting a new Irish national record (ratified) in any of the above events with a bonus of €500.
If the weather is kind on July 11th it might be another record breaking night. Also of course you can play your part, come along and enjoy the night and cheer to your heart’s content.
