Message from Morton Games Meet Director: It's now a week since the Night of Stars at Morton Games. It was a very special night, and in fairness we have had many special Morton Games nights in recent years, but this is one that will long stand in my memory.
A night where we witnessed the fastest ever 100 on Irish soil, an Irish allcomers record, meet record and Stadium record of 10.06 set by Christian Miller (USA).
A night where we had the honour of hosting Olympic hammer champion Camryn Rogers, and the pleasure of seeing her consistently throw in excess of the stadium record.
A night where Ireland's Orla Comerford set the stadium alight with an outstanding run in the international women's mixed classification para 100 as she set a new T13 European record of 11.72.
A night where we witnessed the bravery of a young refugee athlete, Aron Gebramariam take the Albie Thomas 5000 by the scruff of the neck after only 6 laps, and hold off the chasing pack all the way to the finish line .
A night where Sophie O'Sullivan instigated the “Santry roar” in the women's 1500.
And a night where we witnessed the most extraordinary mile ever on Irish soil, a Stadium record and win for Sam Prakel, some 8 years after his last Morton mile win, and the unbelievable sight of all 16 athletes running the magical sub- four-minute mile.
It was truly a night when the stars shone brightly.
None of what happened on Friday July 10th could possibly have happened without the amazing work put in by the Morton Games LOC, the extraordinary work carried out by all of the Clonliffe Harriers volunteers, the professionalism of the officials from our partner Athletics Ireland, the blood sweat and tears of the Morton Stadium team, and the unwavering support of our partners and loyal sponsors.
As meet director I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation and thanks to each and every one of you and also my congratulations on a simply superb job.
Finally I want to thank all of the athletes who competed at this year's meet it was our pleasure to host you and to see you competing at Morton Games. All at Morton Games look forward to welcoming you back again next July.
Yours in sport,
Noel Guiden.
